Course Description:

This course is designed to introduce undergraduate students with fundamentals of academic research writing. It will cover the research process, from selecting a topic to writing a final research proposal. The course will focus on developing skills in paraphrasing, citation techniques,literature review, and abstract writing.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the steps in the research process.
  2. Develop a clear and concise research question relevant to their undergraduate program
  3. Find and evaluate academic sources.
  4. Use paraphrasing and citation techniques effectively.
  5. Write an abstract.
  6. Analyze and synthesize information from various sources-literature review.

WEEKLY SYLLABUS

WEEK 1:

Introduction to the Course & Syllabus

-Discuss what academic writing is.

-Understand course objectives

-Analyze the structure of academic writing

 

WEEK 2: 

Introduce academic/ research paper types, their functions, and content.

-Identifying and describing different types of academic papers (e.g., research paper/journal article, report, case study, conference paper) their main purpose, structure, and typical content

-correctly matching each type to its academic function in a short quiz or discussion activity.

 

WEEK 3:

Introducing Plagiarism & Citation techniques (APA)

-Defining plagiarism

-Identifying different types of plagiarism, and applying basic citation techniques (in-text citation and reference entry)

-Using APA style to avoid plagiarism.

 

WEEK 4:

Paraphrasing Techniques - I

-Introduce paraphrasing through chunking, synonym replacement, and changing structure.

-Focus on meaning retention rather than just wording changes.

 

WEEK 5: 

Paraphrasing Techniques - II

-Paraphrasing exercises with academic articles

 

WEEK 6:

Summarizing Techniques - I

-Ss will learn how to summarize and distinguish it from paraphrasing.

 

WEEK 7: 

Summarizing Techniques - II

-Summarizing exercises with academic articles

How to Conduct Research and Developing a Research Question

-A mini-lecture on keyword search, filters, and databases (e.g., Google Scholar).

-Finding research material/articles related to the SDGs they have chosen (In-class research)

Reviewing Literature - Introducing Annotated Bibliography & Collecting Data (LAPTOPS REQUIRED!)

Additional Notes:

  • Students are encouraged to attend office hours for additional help.
  • Late Policy: Assignments turned in late will be subject to a grade penalty unless prior arrangements are made.
  • You should be in class on time and ready to work at the beginning of each class period.
  • attend class activities and work with their peers collaboratively.
  • give complete attention to class activities and not disturb others in the class.
  • use academic language for all their written production.
  • use English in the classroom.
  • watch their words and actions and have good manners in class.
  • give positive feedback to each other, support and encourage their peers and classmates.
  • check the Institutional Automation System (LMS) weekly for any course announcements.
  • Do not cheat in the exams. Students identified while cheating during an exam will get ‘‘0’’ and disciplinary action will be taken.
  • submit their weekly journals and assignments within the given time. There will be no delay for any of the journals and assignments.
  • keep a record of their attendance.
  • sign the Attendance Sheet for only their name. Those who sign on behalf of absentees will be identified and appropriate procedures will be applied.
